Perfusion.. Wondering what it is?? A trained healthcare professional who work as part of a surgical team. Perfusionist also known as a Clinical Perfusionist or a Cardiovascular Perfusionist operates the heart-lung machine during cardiac surgery and other surgeries that require cardiopulmonary bypass.
Cardiovascular perfusion is the science of providing extra corporeal circulation in order to artificially support and temporarily replace a patient’s respiratory and circulatory systems. By joining this course students will learn to closely monitor the patient’s blood flow and other vital signs during open heart surgery and are also responsible for administering intravenous fluids, blood products and anesthetic drugs. They will also become experts of other life support equipment such as ventricular assist devices and intra-aortic balloon pumps. The primary aim of this course is to academically and clinically prepare the cardiovascular perfusion student for professional practice.
Perfusionists mainly work in operating rooms in hospitals and surgical centers during heart and lung surgery, they also work in CCUs. One of the main roles performed by Perfusionist is to operate the heart-lung machine that keep a patient alive during serious procedures such as open-heart surgery. Perfusionists are also key personnel in placing and managing patients on ventricular assist devices as a bridge to recovery of the patients.

B.Sc Perfusion Technology is a 3 years program.
