B.Sc Optometry

Course Duration: 4 years

Optometry is a primary health care profession in eye care. Optometrists are specialists trained to examine the eyes, diagnose diseases, and manage visual disorders by prescribing spectacles, contact lenses, low visual devices, and eye exercises. A detailed eye examination can also reveal systemic conditions like high blood pressure, anemia, diabetes and cardiac disorder. Optometrists make a diagnosis and refer the patients to the respective specialists for further care and management. They also co-manage conditions with ophthalmologists and other health care professionals.

One can also define it as the science of eye equipment (including lenses and spectacles) which is imbued with the idea of improving the vision of the human eye and removing all kinds of obstacles to sight that an individual may experience. This is a dynamic and challenging career, which allows one to help people, achieve personal growth, community respect, job flexibility, and financial success and offers virtually unlimited opportunities.

The program is envisaged to develop multipurpose ophthalmic manpower at the paramedical level. The training will enable a student to become a competent person in providing service as an Optician, Optometrist, and Refractionist to the community in urban, semi-urban, and rural settings in private, semi-Governmental, and Governmental sectors.

Eligibility for Admission

Candidates belonging to all categories for admission to the Allied Health Sciences should have passed the qualifying examinations after period of 12 years of study with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Botany & Zoology with minimum 35% marks in each subjects (Academic / Vocational Stream)

Admission Requirement

The candidates seeking admission to the Allied Health Science Programmes shall submit the prescribed application to the college along with the copies of the educational certificates and other essential documents to the college. After scrutinizing the application and documents the candidates shall be called for admission based on their merits.

The candidates called for admission shall produce all their original certificates and other original documents pertaining to their qualification as prescribed by the University at the time of admission. The admission of candidates failing to submit the originals shall stand as cancelled.

Candidates passed Higher Secondary from Tamil Nadu State Board

  • Transfer Certificate from the Institution last studied.
  • HSC or equivalent mark statement
  • Community Certificate (except OC candidates)
  • Copy of Aadhar Card
  • Passport Size Photographs (5 Nos.)

Candidates passed Higher Secondary from other than Tamil Nadu State Board

  • Transfer Certificate from the Institution last studied.
  • HSC (10+2) or equivalent mark statement
  • Migration Certificate obtained from the respective board of their study
  • Eligibility Certificate obtained from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai
  • Community Certificate (except OC candidates)
  • Passport Size Photographs (5 Nos.)
  • Copy of Aadhar Card
